Our lives adrift, the loss of one parent, navigating the resettlement of the other across the country, it was a time of transition and change. Uncertain about what lay ahead after careers in academe, research, and private industry, we headed to Southwest Florida to share in the remaining years of our 94 year old paterfamilias who had an illustrious life of service, professional and military accomplishments. As a volunteer with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) for more than 30 years, we advantaged ourselves of his inspiration and followed his guidance to pursue an encore career involving a service for an aging segment of the population toward which we could be passionate in our execution. He lived another two years and we would have the distinction of being his last clients. New Beginnings was launched a year before his passing as “Relocation Specialists Catering to the Senior Community.” For more than fifteen years we went about the challenge of relocating hundreds of seniors from homes, condominiums, and assorted living arrangements to independent and assisted living communities, skilled nursing, memory care, and other hybrid residences.

Employing a hands-on, turnkey approach, engaging the entire transition process, New Beginnings presented a fully decorated apartment in what became an emotional “HGTV-like reveal.” Our clients enjoyed a guest suite while we took on the fragile transformation in their living. Dealing with often three generations of family, lawyers, trust officers, management hierarchy, facilities and wellness staff of the receiving communities created challenging scenarios for what was never a routine relocation experience. Many evolved beyond the move-in and extended our services to surrogate and advocate relationships.
So immersed as to be heedless of our then 68 and 76 years of age, respectively, we finally acquiesced to the physical and emotional demand surging us to bid what seemed an incomprehensible goodbye and move on from New Beginnings. But in so doing, we carried with us a treasure of memories and a vast knowledge and experience base of the opportunities, possibilities, and realities of aging and what constitutes the essential ingredients to being successful at it. Also, we came to appreciate Pat Conroy’s intimation that “No story is a straight line. The geometry of a human life is too imperfect and complex, too distorted by the laughter of time and the bewildering intricacies of fate to admit the straight line into its system of laws.”
We gave each move the full measure of ourselves and painted into the design of the finished apartment the texture and shadings of the wonderful lives we encountered. Bringing a passion, sense of detail, and momentousness to our work left us with intangible rewards that enriched our lives and exceeded all expectations.

A love story commenced as students at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1968, marriage the following year, and then it was on to Princeton University. Academic and research rigors continued in the University of California system - San Diego, Irvine and Berkeley, before taking on the enterprise of building our own think tank, specializing in classified government projects and analytic private industry work.
Raising two children who would bring us the joys of an expanded family, including three grandchildren filled our life with challenges, excitement, and satisfaction beyond measure and they continue to do so, while dispersed to other parts of the country.
We have lived the AgeStrong story and have much to share from our 53 years of marriage, 72 and 80 years of longevity. Long walks on the Gulf and Gordon River Greenway, our daily gym regimen, research and writing projects provided the creative energy to develop our insights and interdisciplinary perspective into the lifecycle of healthy aging.
